Monthly earnings up NOK 900
Full-time central government employees, exclusive health service, had an average monthly earnings of NOK 25 300 at 1 October 2001. This was NOK 900 more than at the same time the previous year, or an increase of 3.9 per cent.
Wage growth varies from 5.3 per cent for employees in universities and equivalent institutions to 2.5 per cent for employees in the armed forces.
Universities and equivalent institutions
Among full-time employees of universities and equivalent institutions, average monthly earnings were NOK 26 800, an increase of NOK 1 300 or 5.3 per cent. Professors had average monthly earnings of about NOK 36 900, an increase of NOK 1 500 or 4.1 per cent. In comparison, associate and assistant professors had monthly earnings of NOK 31 000 and NOK 29 800. This was equivalent to an increase of NOK 1 700 or 5.6 per cent and NOK 2 200 or 7.9 per cent, respectively. Scientists had an average monthly earnings of about NOK 30 300, an increase of NOK 1 400 or 4.7 per cent from the previous year.
Other civil services
About a third of all full-time central government employees are employed in other civil services. Here, average monthly earnings of all full-time employees were NOK 24 200, an increase of NOK 800 or 3.4 per cent from the previous year. In the police force and rural police service average monthly earnings increased by NOK 700 or 2.9 per cent. Sergeants had monthly earnings of NOK 24 400, an increase of just over NOK 500 or 2.2 per cent. In comparison, lower grade officers had monthly earnings of NOK 22 200, an increase of NOK 700 or 3.1 per cent. Sheriffs had monthly earnings of just about NOK 29 700, an increase of NOK 700 or 2.5 per cent.
In the social security administration, monthly earnings increased by just about NOK 500 or 2.6 per cent from the previous year. Employees with executive work positions had average monthly earnings of about NOK 21 300, an increase of NOK 500 or 2.2 per cent. In comparison, heads of divisions had monthly earnings of about NOK 26 600, an increase of NOK 700 or 2.8 per cent.
Other central administration departments
Average monthly earnings of full-time employees in central administration departments, outside ministries, were NOK 27 000. This corresponded to an increase from the previous year of NOK 1 100 or 4.2 per cent. Senior executive officers had monthly earnings of NOK 23 700, an increase of NOK 200 or 1.1 per cent. Advisers had monthly earnings of NOK 27 500, an increase of NOK 300 or 1.1 per cent.
About the statistical basis
The statistics are based on information from the State Central Register of Government Employees and cover 107 177 full-time employees, who were employed in central government occupations 1 October 2001. The statistics also cover full-time employees paid by the wage scale for senior officials and managers and employees in the Civil Aviation Administration. Norwegian State Railways BA and Postal Administration BA are not included. Statistics for employees in health services will be published primo May 2002.
The central government wage settlement in the spring of 2001 resulted from 1 May in an annual increase of NOK 2 200 for each pay grade. A further 1 per cent was set aside from 1 September 2001 in the central wage adjustment negotiations. Effective 1 October 2001, 0.6 per cent was set aside for local negotiations.
