Monthly earnings up NOK 1 100

The average earnings of full-time employees in central government were NOK 29 000 per 1 October 2004. This is an increase of NOK 1 100, or 3.9 per cent, from 2003.

The monthly earnings of women working full-time were NOK 27 200, an increase of NOK 1 400, or 5.3 per cent. In comparison, the monthly earnings of men working full-time were NOK 30 100. This is an increase of nearly NOK 1 000, or 3.4 per cent.

Education at university level

Six out of ten full-time central government employees have a tertiary education. The monthly earnings of employees with a tertiary education of four years or less were NOK 28 500, an increase of NOK 1 000, or 3.6 per cent, from 2003. The monthly earnings of men in this group were NOK 29 200, compared with NOK 27 500 for women. The average monthly earnings of employees with more than four years tertiary education were NOK 33 800, an increase of NOK 1 200, or 3.5 per cent. In this group, men earned NOK 34 900 and women NOK 31 700 on average.

Upper secondary education

About 40 000 full-time employees in central government have upper secondary education as their highest level of education. In this group, the average monthly earnings were NOK 25 600, an increase of NOK 800 or 3.3 per cent from 2003. Men earned NOK 26 800, whereas women earned NOK 24 000 on average.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on preliminary information on 107 666 full-time employees and 23 653 part-time employees reported to the State Central Register of Government Employees per 1 October 2004. The statistics also cover employees paid on the salary scale for managers.

This is the first time the statistics are published by industry instead of service.
