Wages up NOK 1 100

Average monthly earnings, excluding overtime pay, were NOK 33 100 for full-time employees in water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities as of 1 October 2009. This was a year-on-year increase of NOK 1 100, or 3.4 per cent.

Male employees constitute a large proportion of the employees in this industry, and they have distinctly different occupations from the female employees. The men work primarily as drivers, operators, and refuse collectors, while the female employees work as clerks and associate professionals, and this can explain some of the wage differences between men and women: women earn on average NOK 34 300 per month, whereas men earn NOK 32 900. This was a year-on-year increase of 3.5 per cent for men, and 3.6 per cent for women.

About the statistical basis

The wage statistics have the same reference date each year - 1 October - regardless of when the results from the wage settlements apply. This may affect wage changes in the wage statistics from 1 October 2008 to 1 October 2009.

The statistics are based on a sample of firms in the main industry of water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities, with a total of 7 614 full-time employees and 935 part-time employees. According to the Norwegian Central Register of Enterprises and Establishments, the statistics cover approximately 10 000 employees as of October 2009.
