Annual earnings up 4.5 per cent
The estimated average annual earnings for full-time employees in wholesale and retail trade were NOK 323 500 in 2003. This was an increase of NOK 13 800 or 4.5 per cent from 2002.
The average annual earnings are estimated by information from wage statistics from at least two years and the quarterly wage index as well as information from wage negotiations. The quarterly wage index is used to distribute the increase in wages through the year. The annual earnings measure the average earnings for a calendar year. Annual earnings do not include payment for overtime work. The estimated annual earnings for 2003 are preliminary until wage statistics for 2004 have been established.
Lowest increase in wholesale trade
Annual earnings for full-time employees in motor vehicle services were NOK 297 600, an increase of NOK 12 800 or 4.5 per cent from 2002. For full-time employees in wholesale trade annual earnings increased by NOK 13 900 or 4.0 per cent from the same time the previous year, up to NOK 359 000. By comparison annual earnings for full-time employees in retail trade were NOK 274 200, an increase of NOK 13 000 or 5.0 per cent.

Average monthly earnings increased with NOK 900
Average monthly earnings for full-time employees in trade were NOK 27 300. This was an increase of NOK 900 or 3.3 per cent from 1 September 2002. Average monthly earnings are the main term in Statistics Norways wage statistics. Monthly earnings cover basic paid salaries, variable additional allowances and bonuses, commissions and the like. Payment for overtime work is not included. The increase in monthly earnings differs somewhat from the increase in annual earnings. Monthly earnings are compared at 1 September each year, while the change in annual earnings is from one calendar year to the next.
4.5 per cent increase in motor vehicle services
Full-time employees in motor vehicle services had average monthly earnings of NOK 25 100. This was an increase of NOK 1 100 or 4.5 per cent from the same time in 2002.
Trade workers had monthly earnings of NOK 23 100, an increase of NOK 1 100 or 5 per cent. Mechanics make up a large group of the trade workers, with monthly earnings of NOK 23 000. This counted for an increase of NOK 650 or 2.9 per cent from the previous year. Full-time clerks had average monthly earnings of NOK 23 800, an increase of NOK 1 000 or 4.5 per cent.
2.8 per cent increase in wholesale trade
Full-time employees in wholesale trade had average monthly earnings of NOK 30 200. This was an increase of NOK 800 or 2.8 per cent from the same time in 2002.
Full-time clerks, including stock and transport clerks, had monthly earnings of NOK 23 300, an increase of NOK 600 or 2.5 per cent. For senior officials and managers average monthly earnings were NOK 43 000, an increase of NOK 1 300 or 3 per cent. Sales representatives had monthly earnings of NOK 31 900. This was an increase of NOK 1 400 or 4.5 per cent from 2002. By comparison service workers and market sales workers had average monthly earnings of NOK 24 200, an increase of NOK 700 or 3.2 per cent. For full-time professionals average monthly earnings were NOK 39 000, an increase of NOK 1 400 or 3.8 per cent from 2002.
3.2 per cent increase in retail trade
Full-time employees in retail trade had average monthly earnings of NOK 23 100. This was an increase of NOK 700 or 3.2 per cent from the same time in 2002.
In retail trade service, shop and market sales workers make up a large part of all full-time employees. This occupational group consists for the most part of shop sales persons and other sales persons, with monthly earnings of NOK 20 200. This is an increase of NOK 800 or 4.2 per cent from 2002.
About the statistical basis
The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises which covers a total of 82 402 full-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the national accounts for third quarter 2003, the statistics cover approximately 315 000 employees in wholesale and retail trade.

Additional information
Structural changes within the division along with the outcome of collective bargaining would have a certain effect on the wage increase being measured.
