Average monthly earnings up NOK 1 200

Full-time employees in the wholesale and retail trade had average monthly earnings of NOK 33 500 as at 1 September 2008. This is a year-on-year growth of NOK 1 200 or 3.6 per cent.

Wholesale and retail trade includes the industries’ motor vehicle services, wholesale trade, and retail trade. Employees in the wholesale trade had an increase of 4.3 per cent in average monthly earnings. The increase in the retail trade was 3.7 per cent and in motor vehicle services 2.2 per cent.

Variables that affect the earnings development

The underlying earnings development, which is the increase in wages for identical full-time employees in the same profession and same enterprise two years in a row, was 7.5 per cent. Structural changes, as well as results from the wage negotiations, will influence the recorded changes in earnings. This includes the employment pattern, where employees change from full-time to part-time, or vice versa, or employees who change jobs from one industry to another. The development of average earnings is also influenced by the amount of employees who leave and join the work force.

Women and part-time

The wholesale and retail trade is an industry with a marked number of female part-time employees. Of all female employees, two thirds work part-time. In order to be able to compare the wages of part-time and full-time employees, the part-time employees are converted into full-time equivalents. The average monthly earnings of the full-time equivalents were NOK 23 600; a year-on-year growth of NOK 1 000 or 4.6 per cent.

Estimated average annual earnings

Full-time employees in the wholesale and retail trade had estimated annual earnings in 2008 of NOK 398 000. This is an escalation of NOK 16 500 or 4.3 per cent compared to 2007.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises, which covers a total of 95 767 full-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the national accounts for the third quarter 2008, the statistics cover approximately 358 600 employees in the wholesale and retail trade.

Average monthly earnings are the main term in Statistics Norway's wage statistics. Monthly earnings cover basic paid salaries, variable additional allowances and bonuses, commissions and such like. Payment for overtime work is not included in monthly earnings. The increase in monthly earnings differs somewhat from the increase in annual earnings. Monthly earnings are compared at a specific date each year, while the change in annual earnings is from one calendar year to the next. For the calculation, information from two years of wage statistics is used, as well as information from the wage negotiations. Estimated annual earnings for the current year are preliminary until wage statistics for the next year have been established.
