Eighteen counties had an increase in the number employed in the county. The four counties with most employees (Akershus, Oslo, Rogaland and Hordaland) and Troms had the highest increase; varying from 1.5 to about 2 per cent. Telemark had a slight decrease in employment. Telemark also stands out as a county with a considerable decrease in the number of employed persons from 2008-2013, by 2.5 per cent. For Norway as a whole, however, there was a 3.7 per cent increase in employment in the same period.
Higher share of employment among older age groups and lower among younger persons
In total, the share of the population in employment decreased by 0.1 percentage point from 2012 to 2013. The ongoing trend for several years now shows a decrease in the share of the population in employment among younger workers and a growth in the share of the population in employment among older employed persons. As a result of this, the average age of employed persons increased by 0.1 year from 2012 to 2013 to 41.8 years. In 2008, the average age was 41.0 years; almost a year lower.
Men had a lower share of the population in employment for all one-year age groups under 60 years in 2013 compared to 2008. The 60-74 age group in 2013 had a higher share of the population in employment for all one-year age groups compared to 2008. Corresponding figures for women show the same tendency; a lower share of the population in employment for all one-year age groups below 55 years in 2013 compared to 2008 and a higher share of the population in employment for those over 54 in 2013 compared to 2008.
Employed persons in Oslo have the lowest average age; 39.6 in 2013. Hedmark has the highest average age with 43.6 years. The average age has increased in all counties.
Almost 80 per cent work in tertiary industries
About 77 per cent of employed persons’ main job is in the tertiary industries. This was an increase of 1.0 per cent from 2012 to 2013.
Oslo, Akershus, Sogn- og Fjordane and Troms show the strongest growth in tertiary industries, varying from 1.4 to about 2.4 per cent. Østfold was the only county with a decrease in employment from 2012 to 2013, down 0.2 per cent.
Retail trade is the largest industry of the tertiary industries and had a decrease in employment of 0.4 per cent. The other large industries; education and health care activities, had an increase in employment by 1.3 and 1.6 per cent respectively from 2012 to 2013.
Growth in secondary industries
The secondary industries show growth in employment by 2.4 per cent from 2012 to 2013. Sixteen of 19 counties had an increase in employment in the secondary industries, and the growth was highest in the five largest counties, i.e. Akershus, Oslo, Rogaland, Hordaland and Sør-Trondelag. Østfold, Telemark and Sogn og Fjordane had a decrease in employment in the secondary industries.
Machinery and equipment and mining support service activities had the strongest growth in the number of employed persons in the secondary industries, by 9.1 and 8.4 per cent from 2012 to 2013.
Decrease in employment in primary industries
A total of 2.4 per cent of employed persons had their main job in the primary industries in 2013. Employment in the primary industries decreased by 2.5 per cent from 2012 to 2013. Figures between the counties vary considerably due to the greater uncertainty in the data on self-employed persons than for employees.
