Sixteen counties showed an increase in employment, while the counties Telemark and Nord-Trøndelag had a small decrease in employment.

Higher share of employment among older persons and lower among younger persons

In total, the share of the population in employment decreased by 0.1 per cent point from 2013 to 2014. The trend of a decrease in the share of the population in employment among the younger workers and a growth in the share of the population in employment among older employed persons has lasted several years.

The average age of an employed person in 2014 is lowest in the county of Oslo, at 39.5 years, while Hedmark has the highest average age with 43.6 years. These two counties have held these positions for several years.

More than three out of four work in the tertiary industries

About 77 per cent of employed persons in the 4th quarter of 2014 had their main job in the tertiary industries. This is at the same level as in the 4th quarter of 2013.

Vestfold and Oslo showed the strongest growth in tertiary industries, with an increase in employment of 2.0 and 1.9 per cent. No counties had a decrease in employment from 2013 to 2014, but Nord-Trøndelag and Troms had an unchanged level.

Growth in secondary industries

The secondary industries showed a 1.2 per cent growth in employment from 2013 to 2014. Sixteen out of 19 counties had an increase in employment in the secondary industries, with the highest growth in Akershus with 4.4 per cent. Figures for Telemark, Nord-Trøndelag and Buskerud all showed a decrease in employment in the secondary industries.

Decrease in employment in primary industries

Employment in the primary industries decreased by 0.5 per cent from 2013 to 2014. A total of 2.4 per cent of all employed persons had their main job in the primary industries in 2014. Figures vary considerably between the counties due to the greater uncertainty in the data on self-employed persons than for employees.
