Slight decrease in lending from financial institutions
The financial institutions' lending decreased by 0.5 per cent to NOK 3 787 billion during the last quarter. Of these, loans to the public accounted for NOK 3 155 billion. This is a decrease of 0.1 percentage point compared to last quarter.
The slight decrease in the total is mainly due to a reduction in the banks' lending. They have reduced their lending by 3.7 per cent to NOK 2 398 billion. One reason for the decline is the transfer of loans from banks to mortgage companies and the establishment of new mortgage companies, as well as factors related to regulations concerning bonds with priority and the government’s actions aimed at the financial crisis.
The finance and mortgage companies' lending to the public (municipalities, non-financial corporations and households) increased by 38.8 per cent to NOK 821 billion during the last 12 months.
Higher interest margin
The difference between the banks' average interest rates on loans and the average deposit rates, the interest rate margin, increased by 0.28 percentage points to 2.49 per cent during the last 12 months. From the last quarter, the interest rate margin increased by 0.01 percentage points.
Increased stock of securities
Investments in securities increased by 37 per cent to NOK 1 864billion during the third quarter of 2009 compared to last year. The value of investments in equities, units and primary capital certificates increased by 5.8 per cent, while investment in bonds has increased by 31 per cent compared to the third quarter last year. Bonds still have the largest share of the stock of securities by 63 per cent, while equities, units and primary capital certificates account for 24 per cent.
Increased total assets
Total assets for all financial institutions increased by 10 per cent to NOK 6 533 billion compared with the corresponding quarter last year. The total assets in banks increased by 7.9 per cent, while the total assets in insurance companies and finance companies increased by 5.7 per cent and 26.3 per cent respectively during the same period. Total assets indicate the size of the financial institutions. Thus, banks consolidate their position as the leading financial institution in Norway, followed by finance companies and insurance companies.
