Decline in results for pension funds
Municipal and municipal enterprises pension funds have deficits exceeding NOK 100 million in 2001. The surplus for private pension funds in 2001 was NOK 388 million, almost 90 per cent weaker than in 2000. The main reason was the weak performance of the stock market.
Municipal pension funds had a negative result of NOK 134 million in 2001, compared with NOK 228 million profit in 2000. The corresponding result for municipal enterprises pension funds was minus NOK 112 million in 2001, while the private pension funds had a decrease in profit of 87 per cent, from NOK 2 957 million in 2000 to NOK 388 million profit in 2001.
Net income from securities and real estate amounted to minus NOK 483 million for municipal pension funds, minus NOK 125 million for municipal enterprises pension funds, and minus NOK 2 274 million for private pension funds. The main reason was the weak performance in the securities market.
NOK 18 640 million from 2000 to 2001 reduced municipal pension funds' total assets, mainly because one of the largest municipal pension funds was turned into a life insurance company in 2001. Total assets in private pension funds increased by 3.7 per cent to NOK 63 510 million. Municipal enterprises pension funds increased their total assets by 13.6 per cent, i.e. from NOK 3 436 million in 2000 to NOK 3905 million in 2001.
84 per cent of private pension funds' total assets consist of investments in securities. Corresponding figures for municipal and municipal enterprises pension funds was 77 and 83 per cent respectively.
Private pension funds had minor change in investments in securities from 2000 to 2001. Lending increased by 23 per cent in the same period. Municipal enterprises pension funds increased their investments of shares by 18.3 per cent to NOK 1 029 million in 2001. Bonds increased by 11.9 per cent to NOK 2 084 million in 2001, while lending increased by 5 per cent from 2000 to 2001.
