Continued increase for pension funds

Earnings increased for private, and municipal enterprises pension funds in 2004 compared to 2003. For municipal pension funds the result declined in. The improvement is mainly attributed to a significant increase in the securities market, which has given the pension funds considerable gains on securities.

Private pension funds had a NOK 2 265 million surplus in 2004, compared with a NOK 1 667 million surplus in 2003. Municipal pension funds had a surplus of NOK 508 million in 2004, while the municipal enterprises pension funds had a surplus of NOK 248 million in the same period.

Net financial income from securities and real property

The increase in profit may be due to the performance in the securities market. Net earnings from securities and real estate amounted to NOK 4 532 million for private pension funds, NOK 700 million for municipal pension funds and NOK 200 million for municipal enterprises pension funds.

Total assets for private pension funds increased by 9 per cent to NOK 81 billion in 2004 - mainly due to the improvement in the security market. Municipal pension funds increased their total assets by 18 per cent, from NOK 21.7 billion in 2003 to NOK 25.6 billion in 2004. Municipal enterprises pension funds increased their total assets by 17 per cent in the same period - from NOK 6.1 billion to NOK 7.1 billion.

87 per cent of private pension funds' total assets consist of investments in securities. Corresponding figures for municipal and municipal enterprises pension funds were 80 and 86 per cent respectively.

Investments in shares for private pension funds increased by 38.1 per cent from 2003 to 2004, from NOK 20.9 billion to NOK 28.9 billion. Holdings of bonds increased by 7 per cent, while lending decreased by 46.8 per cent in the same period. For the municipal pension funds investments in shares and participation increased by 18.4 per cent, from NOK 3.9 billion in 2003 to NOK 4.6 billion in 2004. Bonds increased by 16.7 per cent, to NOK 15.6 billion in 2004, while lending increased by 7.3 per cent from 2003 to 2004. Municipal enterprises pension funds increased their investments in shares by 51.5 per cent to NOK 2.5 billion in 2004. Holdings of bonds increased by 10.6 per cent to NOK 3.6 billion, while lending increased by 10 per cent from 2003 to 2004.
