Large share of investments by foreigners

Investments by foreigners accounted for more than half of the total net purchase of mutual fund shares in the third quarter. However, a stronger NOK and falling share prices contributed to a decline in the market value of all mutual fund shares in the third quarter.

Stocks of mutual fund shares in total and by types of mutual funds. Market value in NOK million

Stocks of mutual fund shares by holding sectors at 30 September 2007

The net purchase of mutual fund shares amounted to NOK 10 billion in the third quarter, of which NOK 5.3 million was invested by foreigners. Investments by other private non-financial corporations, banks and households including non-profit institutions serving households amounted to NOK 1.5 billion, NOK 1 billion and NOK 454 million respectively. The net purchase consisted partly of share funds (NOK 4.6 billion) and partly of money market funds (NOK 6.3 billion). In the same period, mutual fund shares in hybrid funds and bond funds at a total value of NOK 900 million were redeemed.

The market value of all mutual fund shares was NOK 439.5 billion at 30 September 2007. This is a decrease of 1.4 per cent compared to the previous quarter. The decrease is due to lower net asset values of existing mutual fund shares as a consequence of the strengthening of the NOK and lower share prices in some markets, especially in the Norwegian market.

The institutional sector “Insurance companies” is the largest holder of mutual fund shares, with an owner share of 27.6 per cent at 30 September 2007. In comparison, the sectors “Employees etc”, “Other private non-financial corporations” and “Rest of the world” have owner shares of 26.1, 12.5 and 10.5 per cent respectively.

Changes in the statistics as from Q4 2006

Mutual funds’ own investments in mutual fund shares were included in the figures as from the fourth quarter of 2006. The figures for previous quarters are net figures, i.e. excluding such investments.

As from the same quarter, the statistics are based on direct information on the mutual funds’ holdings of shares, bonds and short-term debt securities. This information is collected from the Norwegian Central Securities Depository and custodians.

In addition, some adjustments have been made to the published tables, among others a more detailed sector specification of the mutual fund shares by holders and of the net purchase of mutual fund shares by purchasers.
