Historically high net purchases
The total value of Norwegian mutual funds went up by more than NOK 98 billion, to a total of NOK 823.9 billion during the first quarter of the year. The steep increase of 13.5 per cent was due to record high net purchases of funds, mainly by life insurance companies.

The net sales of fund shares were NOK 98.1 billion during the first quarter of 2014. This is the highest recorded net purchase since the statistics started. The biggest owner sector; life insurance companies and pension funds, net purchased alone shares worth NOK 85 billion, mainly net buying bond funds that amounted to NOK 82 billion. This has also increased their owner share to 42.2 per cent; up from 35.9 per cent from the previous quarter.
The large net purchases in bond funds during the 1st quarter had an effect on the total capital of the mutual fund shares. The total capital of bond fund shares went up by NOK 143.4 billion to NOK 231 billion, which corresponds to a 61.1 per cent increase.
Moderate net purchases in other types of funds
Net purchases in other bond funds and hybrid funds were NOK 8.5 billion and NOK 1.1 billion respectively. Net purchases in other types of funds were under NOK 1 billion.
Households net sold four quarters in a row
The household sector net sold fund shares of NOK 0.5 billion in the first quarter of 2014, continuing the trend of the three preceding quarters. The sector sold shares of equity funds and money-market funds for NOK 1.6 billion and NOK 0.2 billion respectively.
The owner share of the household sector was 14 per cent in the first quarter of 2014. This is lower compared to the previous quarter, when the owner share was 16 per cent.
Foreign investors net bought fund shares
Foreign investors net sold mutual fund shares of NOK 1.1 billion in the first quarter this year. The owner share of the sector ‘rest of the world’ fell from 14.5 per cent to 12.7 per cent from the 4th quarter of 2013 to the 1st quarter of 2014.
