During the 4th quarter of 2016, the total share capital of mutual funds registered in Norway increased by 3.5 per cent, and total outstanding amounts ended at NOK 1 046.3 billion. The increase in equity funds can largely be explained by a value increase in the shares during the period. Equity funds had the largest increase in share capital and rose by 9.4 per cent to NOK 531.3 billion. On the other hand, the share capital in bond funds went down by 3.9 per cent to NOK 305.4 billion.

The biggest net purchasers of mutual fund shares during the period were foreign nationals, net buying NOK 2.7 billion worth of shares. This signifies a change of pace, after foreign nationals net redeemed NOK 44 billion worth of mutual fund shares over the past eight quarters.

Net purchases of equity funds and net sales of bond funds

Although the total mutual fund share capital increased by 3.5 per cent during the period, the total net purchases summed up to approximately zero. The highest net purchases were made in equity funds, and amounted to NOK 8.2 billion. At the other end, net sales of bond funds amounted to NOK 9.2 billion. In both types of funds, financial enterprises largely accounted for the net purchases. Financial enterprises net purchased NOK 6 billion worth of equity funds and net redeemed bond funds with a total market value of NOK 12.1 billion.

Increase in mutual funds’ holdings of shares

The value of the funds' holdings of shares and the mutual funds' holdings of other mutual fund shares rose by NOK 41.8 and NOK 6.4 billion respectively. At the end of the fourth quarter 2016, the equity portfolios represented 41 per cent of the funds' total assets. The funds' holdings of long-term and short-term debt securities fell by NOK 3.9 and NOK 5.2 billion respectively.
