In Oslo, nearly 30 per cent of the population consist of people in the age group 25-39 years, compared with 21 per cent in the country as a whole. The highest share of people aged 40-49 was found in Akershus. This group made up 16 per cent of population in this county.

In Rogaland, more than 18 per cent of the population were children under 13 years of age. In relative terms, the highest proportion of children under seven years of age was found in Rogaland, Oslo and Akershus. In these counties, this group accounted for slightly more than 8 per cent of the population.

Hedmark, Oppland and Sogn og Fjordane had the highest share of people aged 80 or over. In these counties, this group accounted for 6 per cent of the population.

4 737 200 resident at the end of the year

The population increased by 56 000 to 4 737 200 in 2007. This is the highest increase ever, and 15 000 higher than in 2006, the previous year of record growth. Since 1900, the population increase in per cent has only been higher in 1917, 1920 and 1946.

The excess of net migration, which in 2007 accounted for 71 per cent of the population increase, has contributed strongly to the population growth during the last years.

The age distribution of a population is a result of several conditions: How long people live, the number of migrations and the age of migrants - but primarily the number of births during the last decades.
