Naturalisations reached record level
14 900 persons became naturalised in 2007, the highest number ever registered in Norway. 7 out of 10 who were granted Norwegian citizenship were former citizens in a non-European country.
2 200 more persons were granted Norwegian citizenship in 2007 than in 2005, which was the last record year. The total number of naturalisations since 1977 are 203 000, and more than 140 000 (69 per cent) of those naturalised have non-European origin.
Highest increase for Iraqis and Somalis
Iraqis and Somalis were the two largest groups of foreign citizens who became naturalised in 2007, with 2 600 and 2 200 naturalisations respectively.
The largest increase in naturalisations from the year 2006 to 2007 with 920 naturalisations, were caused by former citizens of Somalia. The number of naturalisations from former citizens of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Sweden decreased in the same period with 160 and 140 persons respectively.
