Reports 2020/16
Buliding activity in rural areas 2008-2018
This report gives an overview of residential and commercial premises erected in rural parts of Norway during the period 2008-2018. The results include statistical breakdowns according to the standard for centrality and the centrality index code, and are also presented for the country as a whole and by county. The county and municipality boundaries as per 1 January 2019 are used.
The most important data source for identifying what has been built and where, is the information on buildings in the national cadastre.
The survey population consists of 233 995 buildings erected in rural areas during the period 2008-2018. Forty-eight per cent of these were residential buildings, 26 per cent were holiday homes, 14 per cent related to primary sector industries and 8 per cent were commercial buildings. Housing accounted for over half of the new buildings in centrality class 1-3, while holiday homes accounted for almost half in centrality classes 5 and 6. The highest level of construction activity outside urban areas was seen in classes 3 and 4, and in the counties of Rogaland and Trøndelag.
