Decrease in building sector due to Easter

The construction sector had altogether a decrease of 3.1 per cent from the 1st quarter last year. The reason for the decrease is mainly the fact that Easter was in the 1s t quarter this year, while it was in the 2n d quarter last year.

The production index for civil engineering works is on the same level as in the 1s t quarter of last year. Considering Easter holiday, this means there was an increase in the civil engineering sector.

There was a high building activity in the new building sector last year. From the 1s t quarter last year to the 1s t quarter this year there was a decrease by 4.3 per cent. Renovation activity was low last year and is still decreasing. From the 1s t quarter of 2001 to the 1s t quarter of 2002 renovation activity decreased by 3.2 per cent. The production index for the whole building sector decreased by 3.8 per cent.
