Increased renovation of buildings

Renovation of buildings increased by 2.7 per cent from the 4th quarter of 2001 to the 4th quarter of 2002. On the other hand, production in civil engineering works and new buildings decreased in the same period.

The total production in the construction industry decreased by 1.2 per cent from the 4th quarter of 2001 to the corresponding quarter last year. Activity in the civil engineering sector went down by 0.6 per cent during the same period.

Production of new buildings decreased by 4.3 per cent in the 4th quarter of 2002 compared with the corresponding period the year before.

New base

A new base is taken into use in all the tables published the 4th quarter of 2002. According to Eurostat regulation the base is changed from 1st quarter 1992=100 to year 2000=100.
