Moderate increase in building activity
The building activity in Norway was 1.9 per cent higher in the 4th quarter 2003 than in the 4th quarter 2002. Renovation of buildings increased by 3.7 per cent, while the production of new buildings was about at the same level as in the 4t h quarter 2002.
The total production in the construction industry increased by 3.9 per cent in the 4t h quarter 2003 compared with the 4t h quarter 2002.
Activity in civil engineering rose by 12.9 per cent from the 4t h quarter 2002 to the 4t h quarter 2003. The enterprise Mesta is included in the base for computation as from the 1s t quarter 2003. This contributes to a higher index for civil engineering works and for the total construction industry in 2003.
From 2002 to 2003 the yearly index for total production in the construction industry increased by 0.6 per cent. This is based on the average of the quarterly indexes. The partial indexes for the year show an increase in the rehabilitation activity by 2.3 per cent, while the production of new buildings decreased by 0.8 per cent.
