Falling activity at start of year

Building and construction activity decreased in the 1st quarter of 2014. Seasonally-adjusted figures show a 1.3 per cent fall compared to the 4th quarter of 2013.

The building activity contributed to the decrease at the beginning of the year, with 0.8 per cent lower activity than the 4th quarter last year, when seasonal differences are factored in. Nevertheless, civil engineering works experienced a rise in activity by 2.3 per cent.

The total production in the first quarter of 2014 was 4.7 per cent higher than the corresponding quarter in 2013 when adjusted for working days. The corresponding rise in the building activity was 4.9 per cent, and 3.8 per cent in civil engineering works.
