Increase in building construction
An area of 7 256 000 square meter utility floor space was started in 2000, an increase of 5.6 per cent compared with 1999. Floor space started for residential building rose by 13.6 per cent, while floor space started for non-residential buildings was unchanged compared with 1999.
Final figures from Statistics Norway's building statistics show 23 550 dwelling starts in 2000. The highest number of dwelling starts were registered in Akershus and Rogaland with 3 574 and 2 887 respectively. In Oslo 1 452 dwellings were started in 2000.
An area of 3 941 000 m2 of non-residential utility floor space, including leisure activities building and residential garage, was started in 2000. The highest numbers of square meter floor space of non-residential buildings were registered in Rogaland and Hordaland, with 379 000 and 406 000 m2 respectively.
New classification of types of buildings
The classification of types of buildings in the Ground Property, Address and Building Register has been revised in 2000. Figures divided by groups can because of this not be compared with the previous years.
