A peak in construction of apartment buildings

From the bottom level in 1993 the number of dwelling starts in blocks rose from 1 108 to 6 471 in 2001. We must back to 1975 to find a higher level of new apartments.

Building work started. Dwelling units, by type of building

Final figures from Statistics Norway's building statistics show 25 266 dwelling starts in 2001. About 30 per cent of the dwellings are in blocks. The increase of new dwellings the last two years concerns multi-dwelling houses. The number of new dwellings in detached houses, semi-detached houses and row houses were at about the same level the last few years.

Fewer office and industrial buildings

Floor space started for office and trade buildings decreased by 25 per cent from 2000 to 2001. Floor space for industrial buildings fell by 15 per cent in the same period.

A total area of 7 184 000 square meter utility floor space was started in 2001, a decrease of 1 per cent compared with 2000. Floor space started for residential buildings rose by 3.1 per cent, while floor space started for none-residential buildings decreased by 4.4 per cent compared with a year before.
