Building starts up 3 per cent
In total, 4.7 million square metres of utility floor space were started during the first eight months of 2005. This is an increase of 3 per cent compared with the same period last year.
This includes 2.2 million square metres of utility floor space for dwellings and 2.5 million square metres for other purposes.
Decline in dwellings started
The number of new dwellings started so far this year is 17 868. This is 2.8 per cent lower than in the corresponding period last year. In August this year, 2 231 new dwellings were started, a decline of 19.6 per cent compared with August last year.
