Multi-dwelling houses down 50 per cent

The building of flats in multi-dwelling buildings decreased by 50 per cent compared with the first quarter of 2008, while the total number of dwelling starts in detached houses and other small houses remains unchanged.

A total of 1 248 flats in multi-dwelling buildings were started during January-March this year, compared with 2 509 in the same period of 2008 and the top level of 4 591 dwelling starts in the first quarter of 2006.

During the first quarter of 2009, a total of 2 225 dwellings in detached houses were started; a 12.8 per cent increase compared with the same period last year. The number of dwellings started in row houses, linked houses and houses with 3-4 dwellings decreased by 14.8 per cent.

High activity within holiday houses

Building starts of holiday houses remain at a high level despite a decrease of 11.7 per cent compared with the first quarter of 2008. A share of 8.3 per cent of the total utility floor space started in this period is occupied with holiday house projects.
