Decrease in building starts continues
During the first five months of 2009, building activity measured in total utility floor space started, fell by 23.1 per cent compared with the corresponding period in 2008.
A total of 8 257 dwelling starts were registered during the first five months of 2009. This is 20.8 per cent fewer dwelling starts compared with the same period in 2008.
Registered utility floor space starts for industrial and public sector buildings decreased by 24.8 per cent in the period January-May 2009 compared with the same period last year.
Utility floor space started for holiday houses and residential garages went down by 21.3 per cent compared with January to May 2008.
