New buildings down 25 per cent
Building activity, measured in total utility floor space started, fell by 23.1 per cent during the first six months of 2009 compared with the corresponding period in 2008.
A total of 9 757 dwelling starts were registered during the first half year of 2009. This is 24.5 per cent fewer than in the same period in 2008.
Registered utility floor space starts for industrial and public sector buildings decreased by 22.9 per cent in the period January-June 2009 compared with the same period in 2008.
Utility floor space started for holiday houses and residential garages went down by 21.5 per cent during the first six months this year compared with the corresponding period last year.
