Dwellings up 20 per cent
In the fourth quarter of 2010, building was started on 6 554 dwellings with 925 000 m2 of utility floor space. This is almost 20 per cent more than in the fourth quarter of 2009.
Utility floor space within the industrial sector increased by 3.5 per cent. The increase in the industrial sector is mainly due to an increase in office buildings.
Large increase in office buildings
In the fourth quarter of 2010, building was started for 437 000 square metres of utility floor space in office buildings. This is an increase of 172 000 square metres compared with the same period in 2009; an increase 65 per cent, and the highest fourth quarter figure in the last decade.
Decrease in detached houses
Building starts on utility floor space for dwellings increased in most sectors. The number of dwellings and utility floor space for dwellings in detached houses has, however, decreased by 16 and 5 per cent respectively. The growth within residential buildings is mainly due to the 100% increase in building activity within multi-dwelling buildings. Utility floor space for dwellings increased from a low level of 118 000 square metres in the fourth quarter of 2009 to 244 000 square metres in the fourth quarter last year.
Registered building permissionsFigures for buildings in the building statistics rely on dates for when permits are registered by the municipality in the data register (Matrikkelen). A building permit does not always mean that construction will be started at once. Especially in low conjunctures it might be that construction projects are not realised, or may be postponed after a building permit has been granted. When the building activity trend turns from a low to a high level, and vice versa, this could affect the interpretation of the statistics. Adjusted registrations for 2008-2010Buildings registered without the need for application, after the introduction of the data register Matrikkelen in 2008, have to varying degrees been registered with all necessary information. This in turn has led to an underestimation of buildings in the agricultural sector in particular. A total of 8 500 buildings have been registered as notifiable matters without information on utility floor space. In this release of the building statistics, new figures are published for the quarters in the period 2008-2010. Table 1 and table 2 present adjusted figures for the period. New and adjusted annual and monthly figures will be released along with the figures for the year 2010 (published 4 March) and the month of January 2011 (published 11 March), respectively. More information about sources of error may be found under heading 5 in About the statistics . |
