Fewer flats and more small houses
In the first three quarters of 2013, building was started on almost 22 000 dwellings, with a total of about 3 million square metres of utility floor space. New dwellings decreased by 2 per cent compared with the first three quarters of 2012.

The drop in building starts for multi-dwelling houses in particular pulled down the total. Building starts for flats dropped by almost 9 per cent. Building starts for dwellings in detached houses and small houses have however increased by more than 4 per cent in the same period.
The county of Akershus had the most dwelling starts, with 3 244, followed by Rogaland and Oslo counties with 2 814 and 2 605 dwellings starts respectively.
Decrease in industrial sector
In the first three quarters of 2013, building was started on 2.8 million square metres of utility floor space within the industrial sector. This is a decrease of almost 10 per cent. The level of building activity is especially low within industrial buildings and warehouse buildings, and hotel and restaurant buildings. New utility floor space within office and business buildings has however increased by 15 per cent.
Registered building permissionsOpen and readClose
Figures for buildings in the building statistics rely on dates for when permits are registered by the municipality in the data register (Matrikkelen). A building permit does not always mean that construction will be started at once. Especially in low conjunctures it might be that construction projects are not realised, or may be postponed after a building permit has been granted. When the building activity trend turns from a low to a high level, and vice versa, this could affect the interpretation of the statistics.
More details about comparability, quality and other information are available in About the statistics .
