Continued growth in construction activity

Construction activity continued to increase in 2011. After a decline in 2009 the construction business had a slight increase in activity in 2010. Figures show that construction activity has continued to increase in 2011 and that the turnover passed the level of the peak year of 2008. The local kind-of-activity units had a total turnover of NOK 362.9 billion, representing an increase of 14.9 per cent from 2010.

The construction industry is divided into several industry classifications. The turnover in civil engineering increased by 8.8 per cent to NOK 34.5 billion, while the turnover in specialised construction activities increased by 9.6 per cent to NOK 152.1 billion. The largest increase in 2011 is found within the local kind-of-activity units in construction of buildings, with a turnover of NOK 142.6 billion; an increase of 21.5 per cent from 2010. This increase is based on a solid upswing of 38.4 per cent from 2010 in the development of building projects, i.e. an increase of NOK 13 billion to a total of NOK 48.8 billion.

Employment increases

Firms in the construction industry employed a total of 200 785 people in 2011. This represents an increase of 3.9 per cent from 2010. Within specialised construction activities, 115 828 persons were employed, representing 57.7 per cent of total employment in the construction industry. The largest growth is in construction of buildings, where employment increased by 5.5 per cent from 66 337 employees in 2010 to 70 004 employees in 2011. However, in construction, employment has had a slight decline, decreasing by 0.7 per cent.

Statistics at enterprise level

Statistics at enterprise level show that the turnover increased by 14.6 per cent to NOK 358.8 billion. Enterprises in the construction of buildings accounted for 49.4 per cent of the total turnover, while 42.0 per cent came from specialised construction activities. Civil engineering accounted for 8.6 per cent of total turnover.

The figures are published at both enterprise and local-kind-of unit level. In general, the figures for enterprises will show other values than the figures for local kind-of-activity units. This is due to the fact that an enterprise registered with its main activity in one industry may have local kind-of-activity units in other industries.
