Construction enterprises increased by 1 342

In 2001 there were 34 886 enterprises with main activities in building and construction. This is 1 342 more than in 2000, an increase of 4 per cent. Turnover of the enterprises increased by 7 per cent in the same period.

The growth in number of enterprises is distributed evenly among the main industry groups within building and construction except for the main group rental of construction or demolition equipment with operator. The number for this group remained on the same level as in 2000.

Enterprises in the construction industry had a turnover of NOK 144 billion in 2001. This is NOK 9.8 billion more than in 2000, a growth of 7 per cent. These enterprises employed 138 606 persons in total. This is 3 742 more than in 2000 and a growth in employment of 3 per cent.

Main industrial groups

Turnover of the main industrial group building of complete constructions or parts thereof; civil engineering increased by 12 per cent or NOK 8.7 billion from 2000 to 2001. The number of employees increased by 6 per cent in these enterprises.

The largest percentage growth concerning employees has taken place within the main industry group site preparation, with 14 per cent more employees in 2001 than in 2000. In this industry turnover increased by 17 per cent.

The decrease in number of employees and turnover in the main industry group building installation is due to change of industry category of some large enterprises that previously sorted under building installation.

Preliminary figures

Preliminary figures for structural statistics are only published on enterprise level. Figures for enterprises will generally show other values than the figures for local kind-of-activity units. The reason is that an enterprise that is registered in one industry may have local kind-of-activity units with activities in other industries.

Only figures for number of enterprises, employees and turnover on a 3-digit industry level are published. Data are not as thoroughly revised, as they will be at the publishing of final figures in June 2003.
