Energy consumption except electricity in Norwegian municipalities. 1991-2001

Energy use in your municipality

Published:

Use of energy from fossil fuels, waste and biofuels have increased in many municipalities since the early nineteen nineties, but the growth varies considerably from municipality to municipality. You can now find calculated energy data for your municipality.

Statistics Norway (SN) presents now data for energy use of fossil fuels, waste and biofuels in Norwegian municipalities as a result of a project financed by Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Administration. The background for the project is a new law directing the energy suppliers to work out energy plans for each municipality. Electricity is not included in the data presented since electricity data today is not available on a municipality level. Electricity will however likely be included in 2005. SN calls attention to the uncertainties regarding the calculations, se below.

21 per cent up

Energy consumption in Norwegian municipalities increased by 21 per cent from 1991 to 2001 (electricity not included). Road traffic and manufacturing industries contributed most to this development, together with heating of housing.

The map shows the share of the municipalities energy use for stationary purposes (except electricity) used for residential heating in 2001.

Households most important in most municipalities

54 per cent of the total energy use in Norway in 2001 was used for stationary purposes for instance heating. Of this 70 per cent was consumed by manufacturing industries while private households accounted for 17 per cent. But even if manufacturing industries had the highest energy consumption in the country as a whole, private households had the highest consumption in most of the municipalities. In 316 out of 434 municipalities, private households had the highest stationary energy use. Manufacturing industries had the highest consumption in 106 municipalities.

About the calculations and uncertainties

Basis for the calculations are the national energy consumption figures from Statistics Norway's energy accounts. National figures for fossil fuels, waste and biofuels are distributed by municipalities by either regional energy data reported by enterprises or use of relevant background information as distribution keys. The municipal energy use is split up on seven energy bearers, six activities for stationary use and four activities for mobile use.

Since the data on municipal level are distributed from the national total, the figures as a rule will be more uncertain than the national figures. The figures need to be considered in combination with knowledge about local conditions since many local initiatives will not be caught up in the calculations.

SN wants feedback from municipalities and other users that have information that can improve the data even more.

The figures will not add up to the national totals published elsewhere on www.ssb.no because energy consumption offshore, more than ½ nautical mile from harbours, and in air space above 100 meters are not included.
