Annual change: small increase in manufacturing output in 2017
From 2016 to 2017, the annual change in manufacturing production was up 0.4 per cent, according to calendar-adjusted figures. Statistics Norway will publish a separate article on Wednesday 28 February about annual changes in manufacturing production for 2017.
Monthly change: increase in manufacturing from November to December
According to seasonally-adjusted figures, manufacturing output increased by 1.3 per cent from November to December 2017. Food products, together with wood and wood products as well as repair and installation of machinery contributed most to the increase. Within food products, the increase was related to growth in processing and preserving of fish.
Twelve-month change: output growth in the Euro area and in Norway in November 2017
According to calendar-adjusted figures, Norwegian manufacturing output saw a clear increase of 2.3 per cent from November 2016 to November 2017. Computer and electrical equipment and the industry grouping refined petroleum, chemicals and pharmaceuticals contributed the most to the growth. Estimated figures from Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office, indicate that output in manufacturing in the Euro area increased strongly by 4.2 per cent in the same period.

Three-month change: clear decline in total industrial production (PII)
According to seasonally-adjusted figures, the total production index (PII) covering extraction, mining, manufacturing and electricity supply saw a decline of 2.5 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2017 compared with the previous quarter. The downturn is particularly related to a strong decline of 10.5 per cent within extraction of natural gas. Extraction of crude petroleum also saw a decline, and was down 5.8 per cent. For more details about oil and gas extraction for December 2017, see the press release from The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate.
Within support activities for petroleum and natural gas extraction, output saw a decrease of 1.4 per cent in the fourth quarter compared with the previous one.
In the same period, mining and quarrying went down 4.2 per cent, while production within Norwegian electricity supply remained more or less unchanged.
1 The index value for period m is the average of period m, m-1 and m-2.
