Growth in manufacturing output in November

Published:

Norwegian manufacturing output saw an increase of 1.5 per cent from October to November 2020, according to seasonally adjusted figures. In the period September-November 2020, manufacturing output had a growth of 3 per cent compared with the previous three-month period. Thus the output growth which has been seen in recent months continues, after the steep decline during the first months of the Corona pandemic.

The index level for Norwegian manufacturing in the period September-November 2020 amounted to 116.5 (2005=100). The corresponding figure for the previous three-month period was 113.1. Figure 1 shows that since the sharp decline of manufacturing output from March to May due to the Corona pandemic, output has increased in the following months, only interrupted by a small decline in September.

1 March 2020 and the subsequent months are specified as outliers in the seasonal adjustment routine Hence, the trend figures for 2020 are not included in the figure.

Monthly change: Continued increase in manufacturing output

According to seasonally-adjusted figures, manufacturing output had an increase of 1.5 per cent from October to November. The industry grouping refined petroleum, chemicals and pharmaceuticals as well as rubber, plastic and mineral production contributed most to the growth. These two industry groupings had an increase of 3.9 and 7.7 per cent respectively.

On the other hand, food products contributed most to dampen the overall increase, with a decline of 1.8 per cent.

Three-month change: Broad growth in manufacturing output

According to seasonally-adjusted figures, manufacturing output saw an increase of 3 per cent in the period September-November 2020 compared with the previous three-month period. Many of the industrial sectors experienced output growth during the period. The industrial sectors which contributed most to the overall increase were ships, boats and oil platforms together with basic metals. These two industries had an increase of 14 and 8.5 per sent respectively.

Figure 2 shows the output development of the analytical grouping petroleum-related manufacturing on a three-month basis. The indicator had a strong growth of 5 per cent in the period September-November compared with the last three-month period.

Monthly change: Increase in the Euro area in October 2020

Estimated figures from Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office, indicate that manufacturing output in the Euro area had a growth of 1.9 per cent from September to October 2020. Thus the production rose again after a period of flattening from August to September. The production activity in October 2020 was still 4.3 per cent lower than the same period last year.

In October 2020, Norwegian manufacturing production had a growth of 0.6 per cent. Sweden saw an output growth of 1.3 per cent, while Denmark had a strong decrease of 5.6 per cent.

The seasonal adjustment routine has been adjusted during the Corona-crisis

Thursday 12th of March 2020 the Norwegian government introduced actions against the spreading of the Corona-virus in Norway. Several manufacturing establishment have been affected by these measures, and this has led to a change in the activity pattern compared to what we usually observe. Hence, the seasonal adjustment routine during the Corona- crisis is done in such a way that the figures during the crisis (from March), are not included in the basis for the calculation of the seasonal pattern. Technically, in the seasonal adjustment routine this is done by specifying March and following months as outliers.

This implies that normal trend figures will not be calculated, and instead the trend will follow the seasonal adjusted figures. One important exception is the last observation, where the trend will be an extrapolated figure where the last observation is not included. The trend figures from, and including, March 2020 will therefore be difficult to interpret.

The seasonal adjustment routine of Statics Norway is in line with the recommendations of Eurostat.
