Manufacturing turnover fell in the second quarter of 2017

Seasonally-adjusted figures showed that the total turnover in Norwegian manufacturing decreased by 1.3 per cent from the first to the second quarter of 2017. However, a 0.2 per cent increase was recorded from May to June 2017.
The index value for turnover in manufacturing was 137.1 (2005=100) in the second quarter of 2017, compared to 138.9 in the previous quarter, according to seasonally-adjusted figures from the statistics Turnover in oil and gas, manufacturing, mining and electricity supply.

Three-month change: decline in food products
Seasonally-adjusted figures showed that the turnover in Norwegian manufacturing decreased 1.3 per cent from the first to the second quarter of 2017. The biggest contributor to the decline was food products, which account for about 26 per cent of total manufacturing turnover, fell 4.8 per cent. The grouping refined petroleum products, and chemical and pharmaceutical products as well as building of ships, boats and oil platforms edged down 7.7 and 11 per cent respectively.

On the contrary, basic metals increased 6.0 per cent, mainly as a result of a 5.6 per cent growth in prices (in NOK) in the metal market in the 2nd quarter of 2017. Moreover, basic chemicals and repair and installation of machinery edged up in this period.
Monthly change: stable trend from May to June
Total Norwegian manufacturing turnover showed a slight increase of 0.2 per cent from May to June 2017, according to seasonally-adjusted figures.
Despite the slight change in total turnover, some of the industries showed significant increases or decreases in this period. Seasonally-adjusted figures showed the fabricated metal products rose 10 per cent. The following industries also increased in this period:
- Basic chemicals
- Machinery and equipment
- Repair and installation of machinery
- Building of ship, boats and oil platforms
Conversely, the grouping refined petroleum products, and chemical and pharmaceutical products as well as basic metals edged down 5.1 and 3.4 respectively.
Monthly change: decline in Norway and rise in the euro area in May
Total turnover for Norwegian manufacturing went down 2.4 per cent from April to May 2017, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. Manufacturing in the euro area showed an increase of 1.2 per cent. The Nordic countries, Sweden and Denmark, edged up 2.5 and 2.6 per cent respectively, according to Eurostat.
