The index level for Norwegian manufacturing in the period August- October 2019 amounted to 119.5 (2005=100). The corresponding figure for the previous three-month period was 119.9. After steady growth since May 2018, the long term trend for the recent months shows that the output increase has leveled out (see figure 1).

Three-month change: clear differences on industry-level
According to seasonally-adjusted figures, manufacturing output decreased marginally with 0.3 per cent in the period August- October 2019 compared with the previous three-month period. Even though total manufacturing output was almost unchanged, there were clear differences on industry-level.
Basic chemicals had a clear output increase of 5.3 per cent in this period. This growth must be seen in context with several maintenance shutdowns in the previous three-month period. In addition, food products also saw a growth due to high production within processing and preserving of fish.
On the other hand, the following industries had a production fall in this three-month period, and contributed the most to the overall output decline:
- machinery and equipment
- basic metals
- rubber, plastic and mineral products

Monthly change: unchanged output from September to October
According to seasonally-adjusted figures, manufacturing output was unchanged from September to October 2019. Food products increased strongly in this period, partly due to high slaughter of salmon. On the other hand, basic chemicals saw a production downturn in this period.
Increase both in the Euro area and in Norway in September
Estimated figures from Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office, indicate that manufacturing output in the Euro area had an increase of 0.3 per cent from August to September 2019. In the same period, Norwegian manufacturing saw a production growth of 0.8 per cent.
In Sweden, manufacturing output declined 0.8 per cent in this period, while Denmark experienced an increase of 1.5 per cent.

Three-month change: low gas extraction leads to a fall in total industrial production (PII)
According to seasonally-adjusted figures, the total production index (PII) covering extraction, mining, manufacturing and electricity supply saw a fall of 1.2 per cent in the period August-October 2019 compared with the previous three-month period. Extraction of crude petroleum increased with almost 15 per cent, while extraction of natural gas decreased strongly with as much as 20 per cent. For more details about oil and gas extraction in this three-month period, see the press release from The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate.
Within support activities for petroleum and natural gas extraction, there was a clear output increase equivalent to 3.1 per cent in the period August- October 2019 compared with the previous three-month period. This growth is partly related to an investment increase in the Norwegian oil and gas sector.
In the same period, both mining and quarrying, and Norwegian electricity supply saw an output growth of 1.2 and 3.4 per cent respectively.
