Three-month change: strong output increase in oil platforms
According to seasonally-adjusted figures, manufacturing output increased marginally with 0.3 per cent in the period June- August 2019 compared with the previous three-month period. The growth is particularly related to a strong output increase of 5.5 per cent within ships, boats and oil platforms. High activity among producers of oil platforms explains this growth. Furthermore, basic chemicals also contributed positively. The production increase comes after a period with several maintenance shutdowns.
On the other hand, the overall output increase was dampened by a production fall in the following industries:
- Computer and electrical equipment
- Machinery and equipment
- Furniture and other manufacturing

Monthly change: clear decline from July to August
According to seasonally-adjusted figures, manufacturing saw a production decline of 1.1 per cent from July to August 2019. Basic chemicals and ships, boats and oil platforms contributed the most to the overall decrease in this period. The decrease in both of these industries must be seen in context with high production levels in July.
Marginal fall in the Euro area, clear increase in Scandinavia in July 2019
Estimated figures from Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office, indicate that manufacturing output in the Euro area had a marginal decrease of 0.3 per cent from June to July 2019. In the same period, Norwegian manufacturing saw a clear production growth of 1 per cent.
In two of our neighboring countries, Sweden had an output increase of 1.4 per cent, while Denmark experienced a clear growth of as much as 4.1 per cent.

Three-month change: decline in total industrial production (PII)
According to seasonally-adjusted figures, the total production index (PII) covering extraction, mining, manufacturing and electricity supply saw a decline of 1.3 per cent in the period June-August 2019 compared with the previous three-month period. Extraction of crude petroleum decreased strongly by 5.1 per cent, while extraction of natural gas declined by 0.7 per cent. For more details about oil and gas extraction in this three-month period, see the press release from The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate.
Within support activities for petroleum and natural gas extraction, there was an output increase equivalent to 2.5 per cent in the period June-August 2019 compared with the previous three-month period. The growth is partly related to an investment increase in the Norwegian oil and gas sector.
In the same period, both mining and quarrying and Norwegian electricity supply saw a clear output growth of 8.2 and 4.7 per cent respectively.
1 The index value for period m is the average of period m, m-1 and m-2.
