Monthly change: machinery and equipment decreases manufacturing turnover

Total Norwegian manufacturing turnover decreased by 1.6 per cent from January to February 2010, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. The domestic market contributed to the decrease. An increase was reported in the export market. The industry building of ships and oil platforms and machinery and equipment contributed the most to the decrease in Norwegian manufacturing turnover, with a decrease of 7.8 and 15 per cent respectively in the period.

On the other hand, food products contributed the most to curb the negative development in total manufacturing turnover.

Monthly change: increase in manufacturing turnover in the euro area in January 2020

Manufacturing turnover in the euro area increased by 2,4 per cent from December 2019 to January 2020, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. Total turnover in Norwegian manufacturing decreased by 1.2 per cent in the same period. In the other Scandinavian countries, the turnover in Denmark went down by 1.5 per cent and increased by 3.5 per cent in Sweden per cent, according to Eurostat.

Impact of the Covid-19-virus on the manufacturing turnover for February 2020

Figures for February 2020: In February 2020 the turnover in manufacturing in Norwegian oil and gas extraction, mining, manufacturing and electricity supply is measured for the period 1.-29. February 2020. On Thursday 12th of March 2020, the Norwegian government introduced a series of measures in order to stopping the spread of the virus. Hence, the manufacturing turnover which is measured in this period is not affected by these measures.

Data collection: The data collection for February figures has been conducted in the period from 2. March to 3.April 2020. Even though some of the data collection has been done after the 12th of March, the response rate is still quite high. The response rate for February 2020 is 94.6 per cent, while the corresponding rate for the same period last year was 98.5 per cent.

Next publications: Statistics Norway is planning to continue disseminating the manufacturing turnover according to the initial publication calendar. There is however great uncertainty related to the data collection process in the coming months. The manufacturing turnover for March will be released on the 8th of May.
