Strong growth in manufacturing output in August
Published:
Norwegian manufacturing output saw a solid increase of 3 per cent from July to August 2020, according to seasonally adjusted figures. Much of this output growth can be ascribed to a strong development in fabricated metal products and machinery and equipment. In the period June-August the output development was unchanged compared to the previous three-month period.

The index level for Norwegian manufacturing in the period June-August 2020 amounted to 113.1 (2005=100). The corresponding figure for the previous three-month period was also 113.1. Figure 1 shows that the output in manufacturing fell considerably from March 2020 and the index reached its lowest point in May 2020, before starting to increase in June. In August the index amounted to 116, which corresponds to a strong development of 3 per cent compared with July.
1 March 2020 and the subsequent months are specified as outliers in the seasonal adjustment routine. Therefore, the trend figures for 2020 are not included in the figure.

Monthly change: several industries with increase in output in August
According to seasonally-adjusted figures, manufacturing output saw a solid increase of 3 per cent from July to August 2020.
Fabricated metal products contributed most to this increase, followed by machinery and equipment. The two industries had output growth of 27 and almost 16 per cent respectively. Several industries experienced an increase in output, which can be linked to a normalization of the activity level after a strong decline in output during spring, due to infection control measures taken to mitigate the spread of the corona virus. Although output increased significantly in August, the activity level is still significantly lower that what it was in the beginning of 2020.
Food and beverages contributed the most to dampen the overall increase, with a decline of 3 per cent. This decline can especially be explained by a lower activity level within processing and preservation of fish.
Three-month change: unchanged development in manufacturing output
According to seasonally-adjusted figures, manufacturing output was unchanged in the period June-August 2020 compared with the previous three-month period. The industry grouping furniture and manufacturing n.e.c. experienced the strongest growth this period, up almost 34 per cent. Ships, boats and oil platforms had the second highest growth, with an increase of 7.3 per cent. Both industries experienced a strong output decline in the period March to May, especially due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. The latest figures show signs of recovery for output within these two industries.
On the other hand, machinery and equipment as well as the industry computer and electrical equipment contributed to dampen the overall increase with a decline of 6.5 and 5.4 per cent respectively.
Figure 2 shows the output development of the analytical grouping petroleum-related manufacturing on a three-month basis, which has turned from negative to positive in the period June-August. However, the output level is still significantly lower that it was before March 2020.

Monthly change: solid output growth in the Euro area in July 2020
Estimated figures from Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office, indicate that manufacturing output in the Euro area had a solid growth of 4.7 per cent from June to July 2020. Thus the increase, which started in May, continued after the strong output decline in March and April. The output level is however still low compared with the level before March, despite the strong growth in the period May to July.
In July, Norwegian manufacturing production increased with 1.8 per cent. Sweden saw an output growth of 2 per cent, while Denmark had a decline of 5.6 per cent.
For more information on the development in European manufacturing sector in July, see this article from Eurostat.
