Three-month change: moderate increase in petroleum-related manufacturing
According to seasonally-adjusted figures, manufacturing output was almost unchanged from March to May 2018 compared to the previous three-month period. The industry grouping refined petroleum, chemicals and pharmaceuticals had the largest negative contribution with a decline of 3.1 per cent. In addition, wood and wood products also had a clear output fall.
On the other hand, ships, boats and oil platforms saw a solid production growth equivalent to 5.1 per cent. The increase is due to high activity within both shipbuilding, and building of oil platforms. The analytical grouping petroleum-related manufacturing saw an overall growth of 0.7 per cent from March to May 2018 compared with the previous three-month period (see figure 3).

Monthly change: output decrease from April to May 2018
According to seasonally-adjusted figures, manufacturing output decreased by 0.7 per cent from April to May 2018. Several industries contributed negatively, including fabricated metal products, ships, boats and oil platforms, as well as the industry grouping refined petroleum, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Food products dampened the overall decline somewhat with a minor increase of 0.6 per cent, while several other industries only had minor changes.
Minor output decline in the Euro area in April 2018
Estimated figures from Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office, indicate that output in manufacturing in the euro area decreased by 0.3 per cent from March to April 2018. In the same period, manufacturing output in Norway saw an increase of 1.1 per cent.
In two of our neighbouring countries, Sweden and Denmark, the developments in manufacturing output pointed in opposite directions from March to April 2018. Sweden saw a decrease of 1.6 per cent, while Denmark had an output growth of 1.2 per cent.
