Export of electricity still high

Norway exported a record 1 946 GWh of electricity in October. With imports of electricity at 89 GWh, this gave an export surplus of 1 857 GWh. The production of electric energy also reached a record high at 11 879 GWh, while the consumption was 10 021 GWh.

Production, consumption and export surplus of electric energy in October. 1979-2000. GWh.

Exports of electricity of 1 946 GWh in October were 340 GWh higher than the earlier record for this month in 1989. Largest was the export of electric energy to Sweden with 1 506 GWh, while exports to Denmark were 422 GWh. Imports of electricity of 89 GWh were average high, and the imports were largest from Sweden with 63 GWh while imports from Denmark were 10 GWh. The value of the export surplus in October was 230 million kroner, and the export surplus share of the total electricity production was 15.6 per cent. The export surplus so far this year is record high at 17 060 GWh and the value of the export surplus is 1 569 million kroner.

Small decrease in electricity consumption

The consumption of electricity was 10 021 GWh, which is a decrease of 0.8 per cent compared with the corresponding month last year. The decrease in electricity consumption in October can be seen in connection with temperatures above normal for most of Norway. The electricity consumption so far this year is 100 352 GWh, which is an increase of 3.6 per cent compared with the corresponding period last year. The consumption of electric energy in energy-intensive industry was 2 862 GWh.

Electricity production towards new highs

The production of electric energy in October was record high for the ninth month in a row and constituted 11 879 GWh. This is an increase of 22.0 per cent compared with October last year and this is 9.4 per cent higher than the previous record of this month from 1997. The increase in production of electricity in the eastern and the southern part of Norway can be explained by the unusually large amount of rain. The electricity production so far this year is 117 412 GWh, which is an increase of 19 242 GWh or 19.6 per cent compared with the corresponding period in 1999. The production last 12 months was 141 888 GWh. This is an increase of 21 017 GWh from the previous 12 months period.

The contents in the water reservoirs in mid-October (Monday the 16.October) were 92.8 per cent of total capacity. This is 2.6 percentage points higher than the corresponding period in 1999 and 2.5 percentage points higher than the median for this period from 1990 to 1999.
