Electricity production down considerably
The production of electricity in May was down 30 per cent compared with the corresponding month last year. This decrease can be due to lower contents in the water reservoirs. The consumption of electricity was 9 131 GWh, which gives an import surplus in May.
The production of electricity in May was 7 911 GWh, which is a decrease of 30 per cent compared with the corresponding month last year. The large decrease in the production must be seen in connection with the fact that the electricity production in May last year was extremely high, 22 per cent higher than the previous record for this month. The production of electricity in May was 9.3 per cent lower than the yearly average for this month for the last 10 years. One possible explanation for this large decrease in the electricity production is the difference in the contents in the water reservoirs. The water reservoirs so far this year is lower than for the corresponding period last year. The decrease can therefore be due to lower contents in the water reservoirs, which involve lower need for production to avoid overflow. The electricity production so far this year is 55 725 GWh, which is a decrease of 11.2 per cent compared with the corresponding period last year.
The contents in the water reservoirs in mid-May were 34.7 per cent of total capacity. This is 15.2 percentage points lower than for the corresponding period last year and 3.0 percentage points lower than the median for this period from 1990 to 2000.
The electricity consumption remains high
The total gross consumption of electricity in May reached a record high of 9 131 GWh, which is 0.2 per cent higher than the previous record for this month from last year. The consumption in May was also 1.1 per cent higher than the average electricity consumption for this month for the last 10 years. The consumption of electricity in other consumption than in the energy intensive manufacturing was however down 0.2 per cent compared with the same month last year. The consumption in the production of energy intensive manufacturing in May was 2 781 GWh, an increase of 1.1 per cent from May last year.
Record high import surplus
The combination of continued high electricity consumption and relatively low production of electricity in May has given an all time high import surplus for the month of May of 1 220 GWh. The value of the import surplus in May was NOK 235.4 million.
