Decrease in the electricity consumption
The gross consumption of electricity in July was 7 576 GWh. This is down 5.8 per cent compared with the corresponding month last year, and can be seen in connection with temperatures above normal and higher electricity prices. The electricity production in July was down 32 per cent from July last year.
The gross consumption of electricity in July was 7 576 GWh, which is down 5.8 per cent compared with corresponding month last year. The electricity consumption in July is also 4.1 per cent higher than yearly average for this month for the last 10 year as a comparison. The decrease in the consumption can partly be seen in connection with temperatures above normal and higher electricity prices. Even if there was a decrease in the overall electricity consumption in July, there was an increase in the consumption in the production of energy intensive manufacturing of 0.4 per cent to 2 695 GWh. The increase was largest in production of industrial chemicals and in the production of aluminium and other metals of 4.9 and 7.7 per cent respectively, while there was 22 per cent decrease in the electricity consumption in the production of iron, steel and ferroalloys. The large decrease in the production of iron, steel and ferroalloys can be seen in connection with lower international prices on metal products.
The decrease in the electricity production continues
The production of electricity in July was 6 880 GWh, which is down 32 per cent compared with corresponding month in 2000. The production in July is also 10.3 per cent lower than the yearly average for this month for the last 10 years. The large decrease in the electricity production from July last year can be seen in connection with the contents in the water reservoirs and by the fact that the production of electricity in July last year was extremely high. The contents in the water reservoirs in mid-July were 70.8 per cent of total capacity. This is 16.0 percentage points lower than for the corresponding period last year and 10.3 percentage points lower than the median for this period from 1990 to 2000.
Import surplus of electricity
Norway imported 696 GWh more electricity in July than we exported. The value of the import surplus in July was NOK 125 million. The import surplus share of the electricity consumption in July was 9.2 per cent.
