Gross consumption down 4.9 per cent
Gross consumption of electricity went down by 4.9 per cent in January compared with the corresponding month last year, but the consumption is still the second highest recorded for this month. Possible reasons to this fall are warmer weather and more expensive electricity.
The consumption was 12 943 GWh in January. This is a decrease of 668 GWh compared with the same month last year. The average temperature was above the normal for the entire country in January. The electricity prices, grid rent and taxes included, were 13.2 per cent higher for households in January this year compared with January last year. The consumption tax fell from NOK 11.30 øre/kWh to NOK 9.30 øre/kWh as of 1st of January.
In energy-intensive manufacturing the consumption of electricity fell by 8.2 per cent compared with the same month last year. The decrease in the consumption of electricity was especially large in the production of iron, steel and ferroalloys, where the consumption fell by 26.6 per cent. This fall in consumption can be seen in connection with lower international prices of metal products. In January the prices on liquid fuels were 9.6 per cent lower than for January last year, and sales of liquid fuels were 29.3 per cent above the level in January last year.
Decline in the production
In January the production of electricity reached 13 497 GWh., is a decrease of 3.8 per cent compared with January last year. The rainfall was above the normal for mostly the entire country, and the water reservoir level was in average 66.7 per cent of the total reservoir capacity in January. As comparison the level was 74.2 per cent for the corresponding month last year. For the last twelve-month period the production was 121 387 GWh, a decrease by 15.5 per cent compared with the same period last year. Thermal production rose by 25.7 in the same period, but represents a modest share of 0.8 per cent of the total production of electricity.
Export surplus
Export of electricity came to 1 167 GWh in January. 90 per cent of the export was to Sweden, and was valued to NOK 228 million. The import was 613 GWh. The export surplus of 554 GWh is 32 per cent higher than for January last year.
