High consumption in power-intensive industries

Gross domestic consumption of power came to 8 003 GWh in August, up 4.7 per cent compared with the corresponding month last year. The bulk of the increase came in power-intensive industries, and their consumption has never been higher in August. It amounted to 2 909 GWh and increased by 9.2 per cent from the corresponding month last year.

Production, consumption and export surplus of electric energy per month. GWh

Production, consumption and export surplus of electric energy in August. 1979-2004. GWh

So far this year the consumption of power in power-intensive industries has increased by 2.2 TWh, or 11.4 per cent. The consumption of power came to 5 094 GWh when we exclude power-intensive industries, 1.2 per cent below average for the past ten years. Norway imported 937 GWh and exported 531 GWh. So far this year net imports to Norway amount to 7 407 GWh.

Low production of power

The production of power has been low in the past months compared with the average for the past years. The production came to 7 597 GWh in August. This is 5 per cent lower than average for August during the past ten years. The water level in the reservoirs was 69.3 per cent of total capacity on 16 August, 17.8 percentage points below the median for the period 1990-2003. The reservoir level has improved during the past weeks and was 78.9 percentage points of total capacity on 6 October, 9.1 percentage points below the median.
