Electricity prices still low
The average price of electricity for households in the third quarter, excluding taxes and grid rent, was 20.0 øre per kWh. This is 35 per cent lower compared to the same quarter in 2011. Spot contracts were the cheapest contract type in the period, at an average cost of 17 øre per kWh.
Due to the supply of water from snow melting in the high mountains throughout the summer, the water reservoirs were well filled and the production of hydro power was high. Combined with low demand for electricity during the summer months this resulted in a noticeable decrease in electricity prices.
The overall average price of electricity for households, including grid rent and taxes, amounted to 69.7 øre per kWh in the third quarter. This is 22 per cent lower compared to the same quarter in 2011. The grid rent and taxes came to 26.1 and 23.7 øre per kWh respectively.
Spot contracts cheaper
Households tied to spot price contracts paid 17.0 øre per kWh on average, excluding grid rent and taxes, in the third quarter of 2012. More than 67 per cent of the power sold to household consumers was sold through spot price contracts; an increase of 16 per cent compared to the same quarter in 2011.
The price of variable price contracts amounted to 23.5 øre per kWh. New fixed-price contracts lasting one year or less and fixed-price contracts lasting one year or more totalled 35.6 and 34.0 øre per kWh respectively. Other fixed-price contracts amounted to 36.1 øre per kWh.
Lower electricity prices for the service industry and in manufacturing
The average price of electricity in the service industry in the third quarter was 19.4 øre per kWh, excluding taxes and grid rent. This is 41 per cent lower than the price one year ago.
In manufacturing excluding energy-intensive manufacturing, the average price amounted to 19.7 øre per kWh. This is 29 per cent lower compared to the same period in 2011.
For energy-intensive manufacturing and the pulp and paper industry, the average price of electricity was 26.3 øre per kWh in the second quarter, excluding taxes and grid rent. This is a 24 per cent increase compared to the third quarter of 2011.
There have been some changes in the statistics from the first quarter of 2012. The measuring period was increased from one week to cover the whole quarter. From January 1 2012, the cost of electricity certificates is included in the prices in the end-user market. |
