Increased consumption of district heating
The consumption of district heating was 3 293 GWh in 2009; an increase of 13 per cent from 2008. The service industry consumed more than two thirds of the total consumption.
The consumption of district heating by the service industry accounted for 68 per cent of total district heating consumption in 2009. This is close to the average for the 2000-2009 period. Households increased their share of consumption in the same period. In 2009, 21 per cent of district heating was consumed by households. Manufacturing accounted for 11 per cent of total district heating consumption in 2009.
Record high investments
Total investments in district heating came to NOK 3 billion in 2009; 145 per cent higher compared with 2008. This is the highest investment level ever recorded. Investments in production plants totalled NOK 2.2 billion in 2009, while investments in distribution plants amounted to NOK 806 million. Other investments came to NOK 52 million in 2009.
Lower price, increased sales income
The price of district heating amounted to 57.5 øre/kWh in 2009, excluding VAT. Nevertheless, increased consumptionresulted in an increase in sales income of 11.4 per cent compared to 2008. In 2009, sales of district heating totalled NOK 1.9 billion.

Refuse incineration the most important energy source
The gross production of hot water and steam came to 4 2761 GWh in 2009, of which 1021 GWh was used in the production of electricity and 5321 GWh was non-distributed heat, resulting in a net production of district heating of 3 642 GWh and losses in the distribution net of 351 GWh.
Production from refuse incineration accounted for 36 per cent of net production of district heating in 2009, making it the most important input factor. Compared to 2008, the share of production from refuse incineration decreased by 7.5 percentage points. The share of oil and electric boilers in production increased from 2008 to 2009. In 2009 they accounted for 6.9 and 19.3 per cent respectively.
The share of wood waste increased by 1.2 percentage points to 15 per cent in 2009, while gas, waste heat and heat pumps accounted for 7.4, 4.8 and 10.5 per cent respectively.
