Sharp increase in consumption of district heating
The consumption of district heating in 2001 reached a record high of 1 815 GWh, more than 20 per cent higher than in last record year 1999. Increased number of producers of district heating and higher production capacity in existing enterprises explains most of the increase.
With an exception of the relatively warm years 1997 and 2000 the consumption of district heating has increased each year the last ten-years. The increase in 2001, however, was larger than usual and compared with 2000 the increase was 358 GWh, 24.6 per cent.
Highest consumption in services
Despite the fact that the increase in consumption of district heating was high for households in 2001, the consumption in services was much higher than for households. The consumption in services amounted to 71.5 per cent of the total. The corresponding percentages for households were 16.4 per cent, and for manufacturing and mining 11.6 per cent.
According to preliminary energy balances the total net domestic consumption of energy was 225 537 GWh in 2001. The consumption of district heating came to only 0.8 per cent of the total net domestic consumption of energy in 2001.
High production in refuse incineration plants
The gross production of hot water and steam in 2001 was 2 281 GWh, 18.5 per cent higher than in 2000. 58 GWh were delivered for production of electricity. 227 GWh was heat not distributed. . The net production of district heating was 1996 GWh. 181 GWh were lost in the distribution net, and 1 815 GWh were delivered to consumers.
The aim of the central authorities is each year to use 4 000 GWh more hot water based on new renewable energy sources, heating pumps and wasted heat by the year 2010.

Increased incomes and investments
Large increase in sales of district heating in 2001, in addition to an increase in the price made the incomes rise from NOK 445 million in 2000 to NOK 678 million in 2001. The average price of district heating, taxes excluded, increased from 30.6 øre/kWh in 2000 to 37.4 øre/kWh in 2001.
Investments increased from NOK 236 millions in 2000 to NOK 330 millions in 2001.
