Definitions of the main concepts and variables

Natural gas can be transported in three different ways:

  • Natural gas in pipelines.
  • As LNG (Liquiefied Natural Gas).
  • As CNG (Compressed Natural Gas).

The natural gas is separated in these three types in the questionnaire.

Standard cubic metres (Sm 3 ) is a unit of measure estimated by approximately 15°C and approx. 1.01325 bar (1 atm.) pressure.

The energy content in natural gas can be changed from year to year, but the changes are relatively small. Theoretical energy content in natural gas in 2013 (Net Calorific Value): 35.44 TJ/mill. Sm 3 .

1 Terrawatthour (TWh) = 1000 Gigawatthours (GWh) = 3 600 Terrajoule (TJ)

Standard classifications

Sales of natural gas is divided between industries according to Standard Industrial Classification.

Administrative information

Regional level

National

Frequency and timeliness

Yearly. Preliminary figures are published within 5 months after the end of the reference year. Final figures are published together with the preliminary figures the next year.

International reporting

The statistic is included as part of the yearly "IEA Gas Questionnaire" reported to International Energy Agency and Eurostat.

Microdata

Data are saved on spreadsheets.

Background

Background and purpose

Information about net domestic use of natural gas has been collected and used in the energy accounts and energy balance since 1994. From the reference year 2003 (with collection also of 2002 data) it has been used a new standardized questionnaire for sales of natural gas in Norway, and with an own publishing of this.

Users and applications

The statistic is included in the energy accounts and energy balance. External user is among others Ministry of Petroleum and Energy and Enova.

Coherence with other statistics

Statistics Norway has a survey about

energy use in the manufacturing industries . This is based on information from companies in the manufacturing industries in Norway about energy use, where natural gas is included. Because the survey about energy use in the manufacturing industries is based on information from the users of energy while the survey about domestic use of natural gas is based on information from the suppliers of natural gas it can be some differences in these two statistics.

Both the survey about domestic use of natural gas and the survey about energy use in the manufacturing industries are used in the preliminary and final figures in the

energy accounts and energy balance published in the autumn. It can be some differences between the statistics for domestic use of natural gas and the energy accounts and energy balance. In the preliminary energy balance published in the spring only the survey for domestic use of natural gas is used as source and the figures in these two statistics normally will be the same.

Production

Population

The population is all companies and enterprises selling natural gas to end users in Norway.

Data sources and sampling

Own data collection.

The whole population is included in the survey. The survey covers all the sales of natural gas to end users in Norway. The observations are the quantities of natural gas sold.

Collection of data, editing and estimations

The questionnaires are sent to the companies and enterprises by mail and e-mail (excel file). The questionnaire is received from the companies and enterprises by mail or e-mail. The questionnaires are sent to the companies and enterprises in January, and the deadline for sending in back to Statistics Norway is in March.

Unknown

The data are controlled against earlier data. Totals are calculated in the excel file containing the questionnaire. Some information from the companies is also available on the Internet.

Confidentiality

Delivery of natural gas in pipelines and CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) are reported in standard cubic metres, while LNG (Liquiefied Natural Gas) is reported in tonn. LNG is converted to standard cubic metres.

Comparability over time and space

From 1993 the natural gas is divided between natural gas in pipelines, LNG and CNG. In the energy balance and energy account this is added together.

Accuracy and reliability

Sources of error and uncertainty

In the tables for supply and consumption of natural gas the statistical diferences show differences between supply and consumption. Measuring problems, or inconsistencies in the methods for collecting or calculate figures for production, export and import from different data sources, can cause statistical differences.

No sampling errors because all companies and enterprises in the population are included.

Maybe some have problems dividing the sales of natural gas between different industries.
