Increased domestic use of natural gas
Net domestic consumption of natural gas is increasing and came to 293 million Sm3 last year, equivalent to 3 240 GWh. The consumption has never been higher, and rose by 11.1 per cent from 2005.
Although net domestic consumption of natural gas is increasing, natural gas still makes up a small proportion of total domestic use of energy. In 2006, natural gas only accounted for 1.5 per cent of the total net consumption of energy.
In addition to net domestic consumption, 6 880 GWh natural gas was used for non-energy purposes in the manufacturing industries, 52 545 GWh was consumed by the energy sector and 190 GWh was converted into other energy bearers.
Natural gas can be transported in pipelines, as liquefied natural gas (LNG) or as compressed natural gas (CNG).
