Increased domestic use of natural gas
Net domestic consumption of natural gas is increasing and came to 306 million Sm3 last year, equivalent to 3 367 GWh. The consumption has never been higher, and rose by 13.2 per cent from 2006.
Although net domestic consumption of natural gas is increasing, natural gas still only makes up a small proportion of total domestic use of energy. In 2007, natural gas only accounted for 1.5 per cent of the total net consumption of energy.
In addition to net domestic consumption, 5 633 GWh natural gas was used for non-energy purposes in the manufacturing industries, 60 409 GWh was consumed by the energy sector and 989 GWh was converted into other energy bearers.
Natural gas can be transported in pipelines, as liquefied natural gas (LNG) or as compressed natural gas (CNG).
